Getting ahead of any issues now, while the weather is still warm, means you’ll head into fall and winter with confidence instead of crossed fingers.

Strange Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore
A furnace that’s running well is mostly background noise. When you start hearing banging, rattling, squealing, or a persistent rumbling, that’s your system trying to tell you something. A banging sound on startup can point to delayed ignition or a problem with the heat exchanger. Rattling sometimes means a loose panel or component, but it can also signal something more serious. Squealing often points to a motor bearing or belt issue.
None of these sounds are normal, and none of them tend to get better on their own. If your furnace was quiet last winter and it’s making noise now when you run it to test it, it’s worth having someone take a look before the season turns.
Uneven Heating or Weak Airflow
Walk through your home. Are some rooms noticeably warmer or cooler than others? Is the air coming through the vents weak compared to what it used to be? This kind of inconsistency can come from a few different places: a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, ductwork problems, or an aging furnace that’s just struggling to keep up with demand.

Higher Energy Bills Without a Clear Reason

The Furnace Is Cycling On and Off Too Often
Short cycling, where the furnace kicks on, runs briefly, and shuts off before the house reaches the set temperature, is a red flag. It can be caused by an overheating issue, a dirty flame sensor, a faulty thermostat, or a problem with the heat exchanger. Whatever the cause, short cycling puts a lot of stress on components and tends to lead to bigger repairs if left alone.
Yellow or Flickering Burner Flame
If your furnace has a viewing window or you’re able to safely observe the burner flame, it should burn blue and steady. A yellow or orange flame, or one that flickers a lot, can indicate incomplete combustion and a possible carbon monoxide concern. This one is serious. Your Furnace Is Getting Up There in Age
Most furnaces have a lifespan of around 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is in that range or beyond, it doesn’t automatically mean you need to replace it, but it does mean you should be paying closer attention.
